Ask Dr. Block: Biochemical Terrain

I’ve heard you speak often about the importance of the “biochemical terrain.” How does our terrain influence our risk of getting cancer?

Biochemical Terrain

I have spent the past 30 years investigating the clinical relevance and influence that the extracellular and intracellular environments have on cancer cells. A patient’s biochemical terrain can either be cancer promoting or cancer inhibiting. If a more comprehensive lab assessment is performed, one that includes oxidative, inflammatory, immune, nutritional and other relevant biomarkers, the results can provide a direction for clinical intervention. A patient’s terrain can be favorably modified through the use of nutritional and off-label medications. Our testing provides an “objective fingerprint,” allowing for individualized intervention.

For example, immune suppression due to treatment such as chemotherapy, nutritional deficiencies, emotional despair or the disease itself, can have profound negative effects on a patient’s overall condition, as well as their ability to tolerate and respond to treatment.
